Education is one of the Trust's top priorities. The AET was therefore happy to help fund environmental NGO participation in this partnership exploring issues in aviation and the environment. Ten years ago, very few companies considered the environment as a significant dimension in their development strategies. Today, 60% of large firms report on environmental matters, and many have environmental managers and policies. Little wonder then that Government reviews of the curriculum in 1999 placed environmental, ethical and economic issues at the heart of the new Year 2000 Business and Geography curricula for 16 - 19 year olds.
In order to help teachers keep up to date with and capitalise on these changes, the Aviation Environment Federation, WWF-UK, British Airways and BAA plc have produced 'In the Air, On the Ground', a unique classroom resource designed to stimulate discussion and debate on a focused contemporary issue - aviation and the environment. Containing a collection of original source materials representing a range of environmental perspectives, the Data Bulletin software and supporting teachers' notes will enable students to explore the complex issues involved in sustainable development decision-making in the aviation industry. By assisting students to investigate the issues for themselves and allowing them to form their own judgements, this resource will help students to develop as responsible employees of the future, equipped to tackle environmental and sustainability issues in the workplace.
